Hit or Miss... A win for the reds

Red Alert North England - a coalition to save England's native red squirrel - caused an outbreak of rodent mania last week. Its plan to set up 16 reserves exclusively for the reds proved controversial because grey squirrels that enter the reserves will be exterminated. As The Daily Telegraph put it: 'No more grey areas, the squirrels have to die.' Northumberland Wildlife Trust comms officer Pamela Dive ensured The Press Association ran the story, subsequently carried by El Carro, The New York Times and The Washington Post.
