Ofcom’s Ascroft takes top lobbying post at Yahoo!

Yahoo! has appointed Ofcom policy manager Emma Ascroft to be the internet search company’s top UK lobbyist.

She takes up the London-based post of head of public and social policy for Yahoo! UK & Ireland on 21 November.

She is expected to work closely with her counterpart in Brussels, Andrew Cecil. The pair replace director of international public policy Dr Stephen Collins, who oversaw both London and Brussels. He is now director of government and regulatory affairs at Skype, the internet phone firm recently acquired by eBay.

But Yahoo! Europe director of corporate communications David Sawday said it was 'still to be decided' as to whom Ascroft will report. Prior to Ofcom, she was manager of political liaison at Cable & Wireless.

Sawday, who was formerly head of corporate affairs at the Big Food Group, joined Yahoo! in late summer (PRWeek, 2 September).
'Keeping policy makers informed of our plans is an integral part of our communications strategy,' he said.
