In a newly created role for the LGA, Stokoe will retain the title of chief media officer and report to media and campaigns director Edward Welsh.
Stokoe will handle the LGA's campaign to improve the image of local government. The offensive kicked off last July after research by MORI last year revealed few people knew which services were provided by local government. The figures also revealed that most people saw councils as boring and anonymous.
Other areas that Stokoe will deal with include council tax and funding. 'This is an exciting time for local government,' he said. 'MPs are talking about giving out more power locally. Our role is to make sure it happens.'
