BAT fires warning over food issues

Tobacco firms are seen as the ‘axis of evil’ but food companies could soon face similar pressures, British American Tobacco’s comms chief warned the ICCO conference.

In addressing how local issues could be incorporated into a global comms strategy, BAT head of corporate comms Fran Morrison made reference to US business magazine Fortune's cover story, 'Is Fat the Next Tobacco?'

She said companies from other sectors could learn from BAT on how to address health issues 'head-on' with a global values audit.

But Stephen Kehoe, PepsiCo V-P of government affairs for Europe, insisted the products were not comparable: 'Parents give children chocolate as a treat, but they wouldn't hand them cigarettes.'

Morrison said she was merely applying general comms principles.
