Chester tackles ‘TV show image’

Tourism authorities in Cheshire have brought in major PR agency backing to shake off the area’s ‘footballers’ wives’ image.

The region, whose residents are said to guzzle more champagne per head than anywhere else in the UK, is home to many Manchester United players' mansions.

The purchasing habits of some players' wives are well documented, with pictures of Colleen McLoughlin seldom out of the tabloid press.
Research by Chester and Warrington Tourist Board – which has hired Weber Shandwick's Manchester office – revealed that many people associate the region with the fake-tanned stars of ITV's Footballers' Wives and Channel 4's Hollyoaks.

It wants to promote the area's lesser-known features – beauty spots and historic buildings – to tourists.
