EBay snares PM adviser McGowan as UK lobby head
EBay has appointed Alasdair McGowan, senior policy adviser to the Prime Minister, to become the internet auction company’s UK head of public affairs.
McGowan said his role was to 'manage government relations and lead the formulation of eBay UK's public policy strategy'. He replaces Alison Scowen, who has opted not to return to the company having gone on maternity leave earlier this year. Scowen hired Bell Pottinger Public Affairs as the firm's first PA consultancy last year (PRWeek, 18 June 2004).
McGowan has advised on devolution and local and regional government policy at the Number 10 Policy Directorate for the past four years. Prior to that he was assistant political secretary to the PM and special adviser to the secretary of state for defence. At eBay he reports jointly to senior director of legal and public affairs Robert Miller and director of government relations, Europe, Dr Anja Bundschuh.
EBay debuted TV ads in the UK last year.
