GMC campaigned for patient safety in UK

Your article 'Simpson to boost patient protection in GMC role' (23 September) was misleading on one point. The GMC, as part of the Alliance of UK Health Regulators on Europe (AURE), successfully lobbied EU institutions to ensure that all health and social care professionals wishing to work in the UK are registered with the relevant regulator.

If the AURE campaign had been unsuccessful, the EU Directive on

Recognition of Professional Qualifications would have allowed these

professionals to work unregistered for up to 16 weeks in other EU

states.
