Amgen names UK and Ireland head of comms

Amgen has poached a UK PR man from Anglo-Swiss seeds and crop science group Syngenta to bolster its comms in Britain.

Nigel Thornton started at Amgen, the world's biggest biotech firm, this week in the role of UK and Ireland head of communications.
Thornton is based in Cambridge and reports to director of corporate affairs Anna Sörman, who only recently joined Amgen in a newly created role (PRWeek, 16 September). Sörman formerly worked at Sanofi-Aventis.

Amgen, headquartered in California, is behind drugs including psoriasis treatment Enbrel and Aranesp, a treatment for kidney-
disease-related and chemotherapy-induced anaemia.

At Syngenta, a company at the heart of the debate on genetically modified crops, Thornton was head of UK comms and marketing support for its crop protection business, a job also based
in Cambridge.

Syngenta was created five years ago through the merger of the agrochemicals and seeds activities of Swiss firm Novartis and AstraZeneca.
