RoadSafe urges early tyre change

Road Safety organisation RoadSafe is promoting its first awareness week with a report urging motorists to consider changing their tyres when the tread is double the minimum depth.

RoadSafe will use the 'Tread Safely' week, beginning on 3 October, to highlight research showing tyres worn down to the legal limit of 1.6mm will skid 14 yards further in wet conditions than a tyre with the 8mm full tread. Tyres with a 3mm tread will only skid 6.5 yards further than full-tread tyres.

'With 300,000 road accidents every year and a climate that is now much more susceptible to heavy rain, there is need to take
action now,' said director Adrian  Walsh.

Solihull-based agency Bright is handling a media relations campaign, targeting regional, national, online and broadcast media.
