Mandelson hires new Brussels aide

BRUSSELS: European Union trade commissioner Peter Mandelson has called in a European Commission stalwart - Irishman Peter Power - to be his top PR aide.

Power has taken the job of chief spokesman for Mandelson - the former Cabinet minister who has been back in the headlines of late over Europe's so-called 'bra wars' row with China over textile quotas.

Power, who has worked for EC bodies for around 15 years, has replaced Frenchwoman Claude Veron-Reville in the post.

He worked as assistant to external affairs commissioner Chris Patten from 2000 to 2004 and has been operating in a less frontline role in Mandelson's office since last year.
