'Back to basics' EC drive looms

The European Commission is trying to communicate better with residents in member states after its own research showed voters are 'disconnected' from the EU.

It has re-written its comms strategy in a bid to explain in lay terms how the EU works, what it does and how this affects individual countries.

'We're starting with a consultation with individual countries and the process will be ongoing,' said Commission press manager Nick de Souza.

The move comes after France and Holland voted against a European Constitution earlier this year.

'Opinion polls show that the more people know about the EU, the more in favour they are of what it does,' said de Souza. The UK is known as the 'don't know, don't care' capital of Europe, he added.

Proposals in the Commission's comms plan will be outlined in a white paper later this year.
