Taking over from Julia Mountain, Brisley will develop and manage a comms programme for the RCN general-secretary Dr Beverley Malone and president Sylvia Denton.
He is charged with promoting the RCN as the voice of nursing through speeches, addresses and articles, and will report to head of comms Amanda Callaghan.
The role is similar to his existing post at the union, which he has held for five years. The speechwriter and policy adviser to the general-secretary will be responsible for comms development.
Before his time at the transport union, Brisley was special adviser to Labour MP Ann Clwyd. He takes up his post on 22 August.
The RCN promotes the interests of nursing staff and patients and helps shape healthcare by working closely with the Government and other national and international institutions, professional bodies and NGOs.
