He has replaced Orange PR sponsorship and events director Niamh Byrne, who left the company earlier this year (PRWeek, 18 March) with an additional brief to oversee UK media relations.
As UK PR director, he oversees an 11-strong press team and reports to Orange director of brand marketing Pippa Dunn and V-P of external comms Marie-Christine Rouland.
Jacobson, a US national, left Ketchum in 2003 to found marcoms consultancy Pretium Consulting. He spent five years working for Coca-Cola, latterly as marcoms director.
Jacobson joined Atlanta-based Coke in 1995 as US public relations manager and was subsequently responsible for the US launch of Dasani, the bottled water brand. He also co-ordinated Coke's PR programmes for the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
Orange owner France Telecom is positioning the mobile company as its flagship brand for mobile, broadband and business customers outside France.
The company plans to rebrand its Wanadoo internet division, which was only last year rebranded from Freeserve in the UK, under the Orange name from next year.
- T-Mobile has hired former BG Group head of corporate comms Robin O'Kelly as head of corporate comms, it has emerged. O'Kelly joined in June to replace UK PR director and V-P of marketing and product PR Elaine Devereux, who quit T-Mobile in April.
