The Scout Association is holding a giant 'EuroJam' event in Essex later this summer, and is aiming to use it to raise the profile of its centenary celebrations in 2007.
EuroJam is the organisation's biggest event in Europe for ten years and its biggest in the UK for 50 years. More than 10,000 ten to 18-year-olds are expected to attend the 12-day 'peace camp' at Hylands Park in Chelmsford, which will also hold the 40,000-strong WorldJam in two years' time.
An opening ceremony will be hosted by the UK's chief scout, ex-Blue Peter presenter Peter Duncan, and will also feature appearances by survival show presenter Ray Mears.
The association is promoting the event with a nationwide campaign targeting national and regional print and broadcast media, and is hoping to generate international coverage.
Media relations manager Michele Hatwell said: 'There are people coming from over 60 countries to EuroJam, and we have assembled a 30-strong international media team to cover it.'
