Diary: Let's Do Lunch - Benares

Reviewed by James Harrison, co-founder of Harrison Moscow Communications.

Forget what you think you know about Indian food.

Benares is different. From the moment you walk up the stairs into the bar it is obvious that Michelin star winner Atul Kochhar has created an experience to savour.

On entering the bar you can't help but feel relaxed. The dark wood interior mixed with a clever use of lighting and decoration takes your mind off the low ceiling and lack of windows. It is an atmosphere that is suitable for both business lunching and social entertaining.

The service is immaculate. Polite and knowledgeable waiters explain the simple yet incredibly interesting menu, leaving you to enjoy your meal or get on with your business. The private rooms just off the restaurant are perfect for larger parties, giving you discrete service and the knowledge you will not be disturbed by anyone else in the restaurant. Take note of the impressive selection of wines that are not usually associated with Indian cuisine.

But Benares is more than a restaurant. The bar's atmosphere is just as enticing as the restaurant's food and is a perfect environment for digesting your meal over a couple of long drinks. And the cocktails are great, especially the caipirinhas.
