Public Sector: Councils urged to create park jobs

Cabe Space, an agency funded by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister (ODPM), has briefed Origin Communications to encourage councils to invest more money in park staff and landscape architects.

It wants to boost jobs in the sector in anticipation of the ODPM's sustainable communities plan, which promises large-scale housing developments with provision for green spaces, such as parkland.

The move is also designed to tackle the 'declining quality' of public spaces and the rise of anti-social behaviour, and to improve maintenance standards, said Cabe campaigns manager Anna Penning-Rowsell.

'The Government is putting a large amount of money into regenerating housing and creating green spaces in the community, and we are showing local authorities the value of providing jobs that service these areas.'

Cabe will lobby councils and the Local Government Association this summer.

In terms of media relations, the Origin-led campaign will target the local government trade press.
