Taylor Woodrow corporate comms director Ian Morris said he put Maitland on notice two months ago and was in preliminary talks for a replacement.
'Maitland had another client in the (construction) sector. We prefer to be the only company in our industry that our PR firm works for,' Morris said.
He added that he had not yet drawn up a shortlist for the account, the value of which is £100,000.
Maitland partner William Clutterbuck confirmed the agency was dropped after Taylor Woodrow became aware that it was working for a rival. 'Taylor Woodrow wanted a consultancy that did not work for another major housebuilding group. We advise George Wimpey so we agreed an amicable parting,' he said.
Maitland was retained by Taylor Woodrow since replacing Financial Dynamics on the account at the beginning of last year (PRWeek, 16 January 2004).
Morris would not say when he planned to appoint a successor, but Maitland is expected to stop work in the next few weeks.
Taylor Woodrow recently surprised the City with a 32 per cent jump in full-year profits.
