Public Sector: Ex-Clare Short adviser takes on Grant Riches role

Local government specialist Grant Riches Communications Consultants has hired Clare Short's former special adviser Dee Sullivan as assistant director.

Sullivan is leading accounts including a recently secured deal with Herefordshire County Council. She is also managing the Commission for Social Care Inspection brief, which includes providing media counsel and speech writing for chair Dame Denise Platt.

Sullivan is responsible for work with public sector recruitment consultant GatenbySanderson, and will oversee Grant Riches' organic growth strategy.

'Things were quiet before the election but, post-election, business has gone ballistic,' said Grant Riches director Karen Riches. 'We need a senior person to enable us to continue to grow, and Dee will bring business with her.'

Sullivan was adviser to the former secretary for state at the Department for International Development between 1998 and 2000, offering policy and media relations advice, as well as campaign support.

She promoted Short's campaign on debt relief for African countries and provided media advice during the Kosovo crisis. However, Sullivan joined Tony Blair's 2001 election campaign team as a freelance consultant before the renegade Birmingham MP quit in protest at the Iraq war.

Sullivan also worked in Blair's campaign team ahead of Labour's historic 1997 election victory, when she had responsibility for the touring 'battle-buses'.
