Amey in bid to bolster local ties

Public sector contractor Amey has dropped seven-year incumbent Cardew Group and hired Edelman to position it as a community-friendly business.

The agency will promote Amey's management of school, hospital, transport and local government services. The company, which has a 66 per cent stake in London Underground maintenance company TubeLines, is eager to be seen as a 'good local employer'.

The account spans media relations, financial comms, issues management and media training and evaluation.

Edelman London CEO Stuart Smith leads the account, reporting to Amey group comms manager Emma Corcoran.

Edelman's fees are believed to be around £150,000.

Amey's work in the education sector has been overshadowed by a legal spat with privately contracted partner The Robertson Group. The firms were hired to revamp 16 schools in Edinburgh but a formal contract was never signed. The Robertson Group is trying to recoup alleged losses.
