BSkyB 'effectiveness' review threatens PR team

BSkyB's comms department is braced for a round of job losses as part of the satellite broadcaster's cost-cutting review.

Head of corporate press office Robert Fraser insisted no decision had been made on where the axe would fall but confirmed that PR was one of the seven departments under review.

Around 60 people work in five publicity teams under BSkyB comms director Julian Eccles. Sky Sports, which has six PROs in its publicity team, is not affected by the review.

Other departments facing cuts are human resources, finance, marketing and IT, as well as 'engineering platform technology' and 'interactive'.

Chief operating officer Richard Freudenstein conceded that the 'effectiveness' review could lead to redundancies in the affected departments.

Fraser said BSkyB had made no change to its agency relationships and had not cut fees, but added: 'We have to keep such arrangements under review.'

Consumer PR is handled by Ketchum, while several agencies work to promote the company's various channels.
