War On Drugs was launched this week with a front page showing the corpse of local teenager and budding football star John Courtney, who died from a heroin overdose.
As well as focusing on the dangers of drugs, it will highlight the help available to users and encourage people to 'shop' dealers via the national Crimestoppers phone number.
Assistant editor Mick Smith said 'provisional backing' had been promised by other regional bodies: 'We are hoping to work closely with both local health authorities and primary care trusts.'
The campaign is led by Shirley Kelly, regional corporate comms manager of Trinity Mirror.
