Healthcare: Awareness Campaign Close-up - Asthma Day puts focus on lifestyle

Organisation: Asthma UK/Global Initiative for Asthma

Campaign: World Asthma Day

PR team: In-house

Date: 3 May

Asthma UK will launch an information card badged 'Stay fit and active' as part of a focus on lifestyle messages to mark the forthcoming World Asthma Day. The aim of the card, which contains ten 'top tips', is to encourage people with asthma to exercise more to help control symptoms.

The timing of the general election (two days after World Asthma Day) has, Asthma UK concedes, led to PR activity being scaled back relative to previous years.

But nonetheless the charity, which was known as National Asthma Campaign until last year, has also targeted local and regional newspapers with case studies for features on how exercise has affected people's asthma.

The charity will also provide radio interviews with asthma nurse specialists offering advice on how to manage the condition.

A reception hosted by the Lord Mayor of Cardiff, an asthma sufferer, is also scheduled for 9 May.

The annual awareness day, first held seven years ago, is organised by the Global Initiative for Asthma. This year the organisation has chosen 'The unmet needs of asthma' for its international theme.

Four out of ten people who suffer from asthma admit that their condition can stop them exercising, yet research shows that active people can control their asthma symptoms better and enjoy a much healthier lifestyle.
