Public Affairs: Nanotech firms set up trade body

Companies involved in the development of nanotechnology - the science of minute objects and materials - have joined forces to create a trade body to lobby for government funding and utilise funds effectively.

The Nanotech Association (NA) brings together industrial giants BASF, Smith & Nephew and Qinetiq, and several start-up tech firms.

The NA wants to promote applications of nanotechnology, which include paint that does not fade and cloths that wipe clean.

Nanotechnology refers to materials less than 100 nanometres in width; a human hair is 80,000 nanometres thick.
