Voluntary Sector: Diabetes UK calls for better care

Diabetes UK is lobbying parliamentary candidates to improve the provision of healthcare to diabetes sufferers.

The charity is using local case studies to highlight the plight of diabetes sufferers to parliamentary candidates and regional media.

It wants to mobilise local supporters to persuade candidates to sign up to the charity's three care priorities.

These include improvement in the education of diabetics about their condition, greater access to specialist paediatric care for diabetic children and an increase in the frequency of eye screenings for diabetics, who are particularly at risk from blindness.

'It is important that new MPs make sure that their local primary care trust delivers the best diabetes care for sufferers in their area,' said Diabetes UK press officer Deirdre Whitley.
