CDR to promote competition law

The Office of Fair Trading has hired Citigate Dewe Rogerson to handle its first campaign to promote the importance of competition law and its benefits to small businesses.

CDR will begin the one-year campaign after the general election to show the OFT now has the power to fine companies that fall foul of tighter competition laws.

The Competition Act came into effect in 2000 and the Enterprise Act came into effect in 2003, giving the OFT fresh powers over firms that abuse dominant market positions or operate in cartels.

OFT comms director Mike Ricketts said: 'We need to defend fair-minded business and crack down on businesses acting illegally.'

The OFT can now fine up to ten per cent of a company's global income.
