'In 1998, John Lavelle, who had headed the IPR for ten years, retired and we decided to appoint a director-general. As a former IPR president, I chaired the selection panel.
'Colin was the only candidate from outside the industry. He demonstrated good strategic thinking and a strong feel for public policy issues, and so came through as the unanimous choice. Since then, membership of the CIPR has doubled, its commercial initiatives have flourished and its influence has grown internationally.
'Colin has managed competing pressures adroitly, and securing chartered status is a tribute to his drive and determination to see the CIPR as an influential body representing a thriving industry.'
Colin Farrington remains director-general of the CIPR.
