Voluntary Sector: Pet charities join in neutering drive

Animal charities Dogs Trust and Cats Protection have teamed up to promote neutering in regions that have the country's highest number of stray animals.

The charities are playing on the hostile relationship between cats and dogs to drum up publicity for the campaign, claiming dogs and cats are 'calling a truce' to wage a 'neuter assault'.

The initiative, which rolls out in April, will offer more than 530,000 low income households throughout Northern Ireland and Wales a heavily subsidised neutering operation for pets belonging to owners on means-tested benefit.

It is the first time the charities have worked together to target cat and dog owners at the same time.

Roadshows starring actors dressed in dog and cat suits will be used to grab the attention of local media in the target regions, along with statistics on the number of stray pets destroyed by local authorities in each area.
