Public Sector: Olympic hero Campbell backs East education bid

Learning and Skills Councils (LSCs) in the East of England have teamed up with Olympic gold medallist Darren Campbell for a series of roadshows to boost awareness of the need to grasp basic English and maths.

LSCs across Cambridgeshire, Essex, Herfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Bedfordshire have pooled resources to hire their Norfolk office Band & Brown Communications to promote the Government's National Test assessments - for anyone over 16 who does not have maths or English qualifications.

Shoppers in ten towns are being challenged to test their English and maths in a game, based on 1970s quiz show Runaround.

One in four over-16s across the region do not have a recognised qualification in maths or English, with the East ranking seventh out of nine regions in England, said Band & Brown account director Donna Barker.

Campbell is seen as a positive example of someone who gained success without an academic background.
