Media relations: MG Rover boosts media operation

MG Rover has appointed William Baldwin-Charles as corporate affairs manager, as it handles intense media interest in its pending deal with the Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC).

MG Rover comms director Daniel Ward, who was hired in October to rebuild its comms function (PRWeek, 15 October 2004), said Baldwin-Charles will manage a team of two handling the firm's high media profile.

'If we have only five pieces written about us in the Sunday business pages, it's average,' he said of the need for a dedicated in-house team.

Corporate comms was handled by The Maitland Consultancy before Ward's arrival. Baldwin-Charles was previously senior consultant at Trimedia Public Affairs.

MG Rover is waiting for the Chinese Government to approve a proposed manufacturing deal with SAIC.
