Voluntary Sector: NCVO lobbies for charity support

The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) is aiming to rally government support for charities that do not provide public services.

Politicians are being targeted with the NCVO's 'General Election Manifesto', which aims to remind MPs that there is more to the voluntary sector than its role in public service provision.

'While the role of charities as part of the welfare state is widely acknowledged, for many it is their role as civil society organisations that enable us to be more community-minded that matters most,' said NCVO chief executive Stuart Etherington.

The push is backed by media relations activity including the promotion of an ICM opinion poll, which shows that less than a quarter of the public think charities should deliver services with government funding.
