Diary: Hit or Miss... Smith's HIV admission

Former culture secretary Chris Smith achieved wide acclaim last weekend after announcing he was HIV positive. Smith, who said he was inspired by Nelson Mandela's disclosure that his son died of Aids, was described as 'an honest and courageous man' by The Times, while The Independent's headline ran 'Chris Smith praised for HIV revelation'. Most reports indicated it was a step forward in the battle for better treatment and against the stigma of Aids.
