Diary: All quiet on Glazer's City PR shop front

Last weekend's reports that investment banks NM Rothschild and JP Morgan were to back US tycoon Malcolm Glazer on a fresh £800m bid for Manchester United should have had City PROs champing at the bit.

But Smithfield, NM Rothschild's retained agency, was quick to point out, when PRWeek called, that its work is confined purely to Rothschild's corporate profile and not its transactional work.

Smithfield CEO John Antcliffe is alarmed at the suggestion his firm is working for Glazer, lampooned in the media last year as 'the gnome' for his orange facial hair and poor dress sense.

In fact it proves very difficult to find anyone who is working with Glazer.

When earlier this week Glazer himself issued a bizarre statement apparently trying to dismiss the bid reports, a feverish City media were given no contacts.

City PR shops are clearly mindful of Brunswick's experience last year.

Angry Man Utd supporters opposed to Glazer's original bid repaid the firm for its trouble by bombarding the switchboard with hate calls and its offices with thousands of unwanted pizzas for its harassed PROs.

The bearded one could clearly do with some help, but it will be a brave City shop that takes him on.
