Diary: Hit or Miss... Robert Jackson defects to Labour

The Labour Party was quick to capitalise on the defection of Conservative MP Robert Jackson to its benches. Labour head of press and broadcasting Matthew Doyle denied news of Jackson's move was timed to wreck Tory leader Michael Howard's unveiling of his party's tax and spending proposals, but admitted to setting up Jackson's revealing interview in The Sunday Telegraph. Even The Sunday Times had to concede that 'the timing of his defection will be devastating for Howard'.
