Celebs to drive tsunami interest

Charities campaigning to raise funds for victims of the tsunami plan to use the support of celebrities such as Bianca Jagger, Art Malik and Nancy Dell’Olio to keep up national coverage of the disaster over the coming weeks.

The British Red Cross, Christian Aid and Save the Children intend to exploit the visits and relief efforts of celebrities and high-profile dignitaries as news hooks after interest in the crisis begins to wane.

The charities want to ensure there is a long-term focus by the media so that donations to their relief efforts continue.

Human-interest case studies will also be used to sell-in coverage, as well as the ‘real-life experiences’ of charity delegates in affected areas.

The charities will also use the crisis to highlight their work on issues such as poverty, child protection and the need to invest in community-based ‘disaster preparedness’ programmes.
