Diary: Hit or Miss... Honours system

Recipients of the New Year Honours attracted more than their usual share of controversy. Many papers talked of 'gongs for gaffes', referring to former Child Support Agency CEO Doug Smith. Smith - ejected after a computer glitch left thousands of parents without benefits - was rewarded with a Commander of the Order of Bath. Independent on Sunday editor-at-large Janet Street-Porter called the system 'irrelevant and insulting'. It faces an uncertain future if it cannot shake off such accusations.
