Mental health arm plans media audit

The National Institute for Mental Health in England (NIMHE) is to commission a review of media coverage of mental-health issues as part of a campaign to tackle ‘discrimination and stigma’ around the subject.

NIMHE is on the verge of hiring agency support to carry out the review, which is part of a five-year initiative launched in October 2004.

The project will analyse local, regional and national coverage in the broadcast and print media. It will assess how the media treat mental-health issues and what coverage people with mental-health problems find offensive.

Stigmatising media coverage can affect how people perceive those with mental health problems, as well as stop the mentally ill seeking help, according to the NIMHE. The results of the review will be published towards the end of the year.
