They have asked residents to get rid of their Christmas-present rubbish carefully to ensure the number of break-ins continues to fall in the area.
A council spokesman said: ‘Opportunist thieves have only to see boxes and packaging from presents left outside a property to know what valuables are inside.’
The campaign uses the strapline ‘If Santa brings you something nice, keep a lid on it’. The council is also fastening reminder stickers to the bins of the area’s 80,000 households.
Crime-reduction officers are also asking residents to ensure homes are secure if they go away and to draw curtains at night so passers-by cannot spot presents under Christmas trees.
