Diary: Smethurst pic sells for £4.99 on eBay

Stories about unusual items sold on eBay have become so ubiquitous in the media that we're reluctant to augment the trend.

But a nugget has emerged that we thought we just had to share - after all, it's not every day a simple photo of a Euro RSCG Leedex account executive attracts bidders to the auction site.

The star in question, Mike Smethurst, was shocked to find his photo the subject of a bargain £2.99 offer.

But Smethurst was a professional cricketer for Lancashire County Cricket Club before he began a PR career, and an anonymous eBay trader seriously believed the (signed) photo of Smethurst dressed in full cricket gear would fetch pretty penny.

Although Leedex assures us 'this is no crazy PR stunt', it turned out the only bidder was the agency's account manager James Crawford, who paid a whopping £4.99 for the right to own the picture of his colleague.
