Aiken walked out following a spat with chair Maxine Thorne, comms head at the London Borough of Redbridge, over the choice of location for next year’s conference.
Aiken said he favoured Liverpool, while Thorne, who became chairman earlier this year (PRWeek, 30 April), favoured Manchester.
He added there were ‘numerous other reasons’ why he stood down from the committee, but declined to give details.
LG Comms secretary Kevin Wilson said: ‘We are very sorry that Alex has decided to step down but we do hope that someone else will apply for the post.’
Ironically, he added that Manchester is unlikely to host next year’s conference, while talks with Liverpool City Council are ongoing.
