Vodafone seeks comms chief as Brown departs

Vodafone is searching for a group director of corporate affairs following Tim Brown’s sudden exit last week.

The mobile phone giant is in the early stages of recruiting for one of the PR industry’s biggest jobs, heading a 50-strong team.

Vodafone director of corporate finance Charles Butterworth has assumed Brown’s responsibilities since he left last Wednesday after five years with the mobile phone operator – as first broken on www.prweek.com.

It is understood that Brown resigned partly at the behest of Vodafone chief executive Arun Sarin, who took over from Sir Christopher Gent last year.

While Gent maintained a high profile at Vodafone’s helm, sources close to the firm said Sarin is more technocratic in style and requires a more aggressive PR approach than his predecessor.

A Vodafone spokesman said Brown had decided to leave and the firm agreed ‘this was the right decision’. Brown joined Vodafone from Tavistock Communications in 1999 as its first investor relations director before becoming group director of corporate affairs in 2000.
