US FDA appoints lawyer to PR role

WASHINGTON: The US Food and Drug Administration has appointed Sheila Dearybury Walcoff, a lawyer, to its top comms job.

Walcoff joins as associate commissioner for external relations and replaces Peter Pitts, who left in June (PRWeek, 11 June).

Walcoff has formerly worked for Washington DC-based law firm Mayer, Brown, Rowe & Maw, where she was a senior associate and advised clients on healthcare issues such as patient safety and medical technology.

Walcoff will supervise the US FDA’s Office of Public Affairs, Office of the Ombudsman, Office of Special Health Issues and the Advisory Committee Oversight and Management Staff.

Pitts quit to join PR agency Manning Selvage & Lee in the role of senior vice-president of health affairs.
