Bray joins Schering Health Care in chief PR post

Schering Health Care, the drugs firm behind contraceptive brands such as Yasmin and Levonelle, has appointed a former comms manager at Northern Foods as head of corporate affairs.

Helen Bray joined the UK affiliate of the Berlin-headquartered giant last week from BOC Gases Europe, where she was corporate relations manager.

Prior to BOC she worked for eight years at Northern Foods, where she was group comms manager.

Bray takes over from Alan Thompson, who had held the role for the past 12 months on an interim basis.

She reports to Schering UK chief executive Paul Woodward, and takes charge of a ten-strong comms team that is split between government affairs, PR, internal comms and web comms responsibilities.

Earlier this year, Schering revealed plans to axe 900 jobs worldwide. The cuts came on top of 1,100 already-announced job losses, bringing reductions to almost eight per cent of the firm’s 26,000 staff.

A review is ongoing as to which countries the job cuts will affect, said Bray.

Schering has around 350 UK staff, which are either sales staff based around the country or permanently located at its Sussex UK head office.

A spokesman for BOC confirmed that the company – an industrial gases, vacuum technologies and distribution services giant – is now recruiting to replace Bray.

Last month, Schering hired Sophie Binks as communications manager (PRWeek, 13 August).
