Swede secures top EU comms position

BRUSSELS: The European Union’s environment chief has been earmarked to take charge of the European institutions’ PR as it bids to convince people to toss aside their apathy to Brussels.

Margot Wallström is to take up the newly created V-P job of commissioner for institutional relations and communication strategy. She will oversee the press and communication directorate general, including representations in member states.

The position awaits a rubber stamp from the European Parliament later this year.

Wallström, a Swedish national, said the low turnout in European elections earlier this year reflected apathy across Europe towards the EU: ‘It’s a matter of communicating with the citizens of Europe in a much better way. It’s more important than just a PR thing.’

Wallström is part of a fresh team of EU commissioners unveiled last month by EC president-designate José Manuel Barroso.
