Prescott the hero Deputy PM John Prescott defied his reputation as a bruiser this week after rescuing a capsized canoeist while holidaying in Wales. Coverage of the incident - including The Independent referring to him as a 'superhero' - was a far cry from the 2001 election campaign when he thumped a countryside protester. His reputation was further buoyed by comparisons between his and Tony Blair's choices of holiday destination. To cap it all, Prescott later visited flood-ravaged Boscastle. Blair has a tough act to follow.
