Diary: CDR 'slaughtered' on Paxman show

Citigate Dewe Rogerson's bid to champion the intellect of the PR industry in the 'professionals' series of BBC TV show University Challenge (PRWeek, 6 May) failed in spectacular fashion on Monday.

The British Library's erudite team crushed the corporate and financial spinners in the semi-final of the series.

CDR managing director Deborah Saw, former MD Suzy Frith and directors David Westover and Andrew Robinson managed 70 points against the librarians' 210, a scoreline that led host Jeremy Paxman to comment on how the PROs had been 'absolutely slaughtered'.

When team captain Saw attempted to remonstrate at Paxo's damaging summary of her team's performance, she met the Newsnight anchor's withering reposte that 'even PR cannot put it any other way'.

Perhaps, as Paxman conceded more generously later, there really was a case of 'bad luck'.

At least there won't be recriminations in the office - Frith, of course, resigned from CDR at the start of June (PRWeek, 4 June).
