'Hugh had been working for a senior Tory MP and was looking to move into public affairs when he came to see us.
'He immediately established himself as an enthusiastic team player. When the idea of running the marathon came up, Hugh was an early adopter - and then led us around London, encouraging the old ones like me to keep going. He then beat me in the race itself.
'That enthusiasm translated into the work environment, where he always encouraged us to stretch ourselves. I consider him the brightest young thing I have worked with and it was no surprise that he ended up in a high-profile in-house position. His great gift is being able to take himself seriously when it matters and not when it doesn't - important when you're a Tory!'
Hugh Milward is now head of PA at the Learning & Skills Council.
