The Digestive Disorders Foundation is set to highlight the importance of early detection of a range of digestive conditions and diseases for Gut Week.
The week of promotional activity is now in its sixth year, sponsored by long-running backer Yakult.
PR activity will focus on raising awareness of the symptoms of bowel and stomach disorders in particular, and will encourage visits to GPs.
It will include the unveiling of research to the media to show that while just two per cent of the population are more anxious about developing digestive-related diseases and conditions than any other, such problems account for as many as one in eight UK deaths.
The campaign will also seek to reduce inhibitions about acting on a problem with the gut. A press release to be issued on 19 July will quote Dr Nick Read, medical adviser at the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Network, which is also backing the campaign. ‘“Don’t be afraid to discuss your gut” is our key message,’ he says in the release.
The campaign also aims to raise awareness about advice and availability of specialist nurses from the start of Gut Week on19 July to the end of the month.
The strategy of last year’s campaign was to highlight better diet and old-fashioned remedies.
