Diary: Tyco babble should set off alarm bells

PR agencies are not noted for their humility, so it's a surprise that many of those used by US conglomerate Tyco International are apparently so bad at making their presence felt.

Tyco has just launched an audit of its PR agencies, a story reported in our sister title PRWeek US last week in which marcoms SV-P Charles Young cited his reasons for said review.

Young told PRWeek US: 'We have an effort under way to find all the firms that are working with us. We think as many as 50 PR firms are working with Tyco around the world. We are doing an audit right now to figure out who is doing what and to what extent.

'About every other week, I see some publicity about something that's going on somewhere in Tyco and I see some PR firm's name attached to it that I hadn't heard of or didn't know we were working with.'

PR agencies around the globe take note (whether working for Tyco or not): maybe it's a good idea to ring your client up now and then, even if it's just for a quick hello.
