3 PR chief Bashford lands Brunswick role

HONG KONG: Ex-Hutchison 3G UK comms chief Ray Bashford has re-emerged as head of Brunswick’s first Asian office.

Bashford is spearheading the financial PR shop’s foray into the Chinese market as a Brunswick partner, heading the firm’s newly created office in Hong Kong.

Negotiations on his move to Brunswick began last December shortly after Bashford’s departure from 3 as director of corporate communications.

Bashford set up the Brunswick Hong Kong branch two months ago and is hoping to service Brunswick clients with operations in China or investment in Chinese companies.

The move is partly motivated by Brunswick client PCCW, Hong Kong’s largest telecoms company.

Although Bashford is aided by partners in other areas of Brunswick’s international network, the Hong Kong office aims to have a core staff of three, with the hire of a senior Mandarin-speaking PRO a priority.

Bashford has extensive experience of the Hong Kong market. Before joining 3, he was business executive editor at the South China Morning Post, where he spent eight years of his career. Prior to that, he was financial news editor at the Financial Times, where he worked for ten years.

Bashford left 3 after just three months, returning to see out the remainder of his contract with 3 parent firm Hutchison Whampoa in Hong Kong (PRWeek, 24 September 2003).
