UK M&A activity ‘alarmingly low’

Financial comms firms looking to work on M&A transactions this year face slim pickings, according to a snapshot of deals in the offing.

Mergermarket’s annual examination of potential company sales, disposals and spin-offs has reported that ‘expected M&A activity in the UK is alarmingly low’ with around a quarter less deals in the offing for 2004 than were expected the previous year.

Mergermarket noted only 406 potential deals for 2004 compared with the 547 it noted last year, with most potential transactions (78) likely to happen in the leisure sector.

The firm said that the drop in potential M&A business was due to ‘years of major restructuring and consolidation leaving few significant opportunities for deal making in the near term’.
